(Pella, Iowa)--At just seven months old, not many people expected Cayla Garland to finish her first Klompen Klassic. However, finish she did, and finish well. Cayla defeated her father Jerod by almost a minute and edged her mother Leah by about a foot in a close finish. In fact, from the very beginning Cayla held a slight lead over her mother and managed to stay just ahead throughout the 3.1-mile course.
"Da da ba ba da," said the winded youngster after the race.
Leah had not run the Klompen since she ran as a member of the Tulip Court eleven years ago. She walked then, but this time had a different game plan. She smashed her goal of trying to break 30 minutes by over a minute. "I'm happy with the time, but it's a little bittersweet knowing Cayla beat me."
Five years ago, her father had run a 20-minute race, but he had no illusions of duplicating that mark this time around. What has changed? "Well, five years ago I was a bachelor and eating mac & cheese or whatever cheap stuff I could find. Now that I'm married, let's just say I'm eating a lot better."
Cayla's secret is in her elaborate stretching routine, as shown below. She's become incredibly flexible, and there are many theories abounding about where she learned her exercises. Did she travel overseas to learn them? Natural instinct? When asked about it, she paused, spit up on the reporter, smiled, and said, "Da da ba ba da."

That is flat-out amazing. I know it's in the genes and all, but nonetheless...still amazing.
LOL! I love it! Good job, Cayla (and Leah and Jerod too, of course!!)
Yay, Cayla!
