fun times at the pool!

Tonight was Cayla's very first time in the pool! We were encouraged by the AEA (Area Education Agency) folks who work with Cayla to enroll her in swimming lessons. They said it would help improve her muscle tone, as children with Downs normally have low muscle tone. So we signed her up in a class that was for kids six months or older. We were expecting lots of other babies in the class, but it turns out the youngest besides Cayla is probably 2 or 3 years old. Cayla just takes everything in stride and didn't mind.

This was one of the best pictures I got. You have to click on this one for the bigger picture. Her expression is priceless! She was definitely loving it. And for forty minutes straight!

Here she is a little more focused, trying to master the back-float. She was doing a great job of kicking her little legs. Some of the exercises were a little out of her league, like jumping into the pool and blowing bubbles in the water. They think six month olds can do this stuff?

Cayla has her gear on in this one. We strapped a couple of yellow floaties on her butt. We made the "fun noodle" into a pretzel that helped her stay afloat. One of her favorite things was going up on the side and then "jumping" into the pool. Here she's already smiling in anticipation.

Overall, it was a blast and we're already looking forward to next Monday. Cayla Phelps???
